The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino Las Vegas History
In the beginning, the property the Golden Gate sits on was offered in an auction in 1905. The land was purchased for $1,750 at the southeast corner of Main Street and Fremont Street. A hotel was established on the property known as the Hotel Nevada.
In August 1905, a more modern two story structure was planned to be built on the property. The new two story Hotel Nevada was opened on January 13, 1906 and was the first hotel building in Las Vegas. Hotel rooms at that time were $1 per day.
The hotel and casino operated until 1909 when gambling was made illegal in Nevada. In 1925, the hotel become even more popular when Fremont Street was paved. Gambling became legal again in 1931 and the Hotel Nevada re-opened their casino. Also at that time, the hotel and casino expanded to four stories.
In 1955, investors invested $330,000 to renovate and establish the Golden Gate casino on the ground floor. The hotel at that time was called Sal Sagev.
The owner of the Sal Sagev passed away in February 1957. In 1974, the entire property became the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino.
The Bay City Diner was replaced by the Du-par’s restaurant as a leased tenant in 2010.
A major renovation occurred in 2012 for $12 million which included a 35,000 square foot, five story hotel tower with 14 suites and two penthouses. The casino was also expanded.
On February 7, 2017, the hotel saw the Du-par’s restaurant close due to financial problems.
The casino was doubled in size to 12,243 square feet starting on August 21, 2017 and added 100 new slot machines. Finally, a sportsbook was added on June 1, 2019.
