Explore the world of everyone’s favorite ten-inch tall fashionista with Barbie: A Cultural Icon – The Exposition at the Shops at Crystals. This unique experience offers a colorful and thorough history lesson about this pop culture phenomenon that spans decades. Travel back to 1959 to find out how this itty-bitty blonde beauty took the world by storm. What makes this exhibition truly unique is the bird’s eye view it offers of the world’s changing culture through the lens of this singular children’s toy. Your tour starts with the original design that features demure, downcast eyes, housewife fashion, and the most intricately made miniaturized doll accessories we’ve ever seen. From that striped bathing suit style, Barbie has evolved through the decades to highlight the most important parts of each era. The 1970’s Malibu Barbie changed the body design to bright, forward-facing eyes, a glowy suntan, and an open-mouthed smile that continued to be the basic face design for the next few decades. When the feminist and civil rights movements began to rise in the United States, Barbie was the first company to make a black doll to show support for desegregation in the 1960s. Throughout Barbie’s lifetime, she’s been a doctor, a president, a pilot, and an astronaut, showing girls from multiple decades that there is no limit to what women can do. Barbie has been on the cutting edge of culture and fashion throughout her time on department store shelves, and Mattel continues to update her design to be a positive role model for future generations. So snap a few photos of your favorite doll or take a seat in the Barbie dream house because at Barbie: A Cultural Icon, we’re all Barbie girls in a Barbie world.

The wildest part of Las Vegas isn’t necessarily the nightlife. Right on the Las Vegas Strip is an attraction that defines wild in Vegas in a whole new way. Welcome to Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at The Mirage Hotel & Casino where white tigers and lions, leopards and dolphins enjoy the Vegas sun and a posh resort like the millions of human tourists who visit the city each year. The facility, which opened in 1990, is the dream of legendary magicians Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn, better known to millions as Siegfried & Roy. For years the duo has worked to help save endangered animals, primarily white tigers and lions. The Secret Garden If you loved collecting those big, cuddly stuffed animals as a kid, then visiting the Secret Garden at the Mirage is a dream come true. Here you can see your furry friends come to life within the lush surroundings of the habitat. The beautiful attraction displays six different showcases of white tigers and lions, as well as leopards. But the majority of these cats aren’t like the typical wild animals you see. “These are some of the most impressive cats I’ve ever seen,” said Dave Blasko, director of animal care at The Secret Garden. “People come from all over the world to see them.” The Secret Garden stands out from other animal habitats because it features white striped tigers as well as snow white ones. With their distinctive fur color and crystal blue eyes, the cats almost seem unreal. For more than 20 years, Siegfried and Roy dedicated their time in preserving these rare and exotic breeds. Not only does the Secret Garden preserve these animals from extinction, but visitors also have the opportunity to gain a better understanding and awareness about them. As you meander through the habitat, you’ll notice all the lush greenery, fun, jungle-themed music and even a towering lion figure made from plants. Some of the cats even have built-in waterfalls in their resting areas. You’ll also discover fun facts about the animals written on plaques spread throughout the facility. For instance, female lions do most of the hunting while the male lion watches over the pride. Also, tigers actually enjoy swimming. “Tigers are one of the few cats who like water,” said Blasko. If you want to take some of the wildlife back home with you, the gift shop at the Secret Garden offers souvenirs. Together with its lush foliage and gorgeous waterfalls, the Secret Garden is the ideal place to visit any time of the year. With all its trees and tropical surroundings, you’ll literally feel like you’re in another country. Four tiger cubs were born at the facility on August 5, 2015. They are on display in the nursery each day from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. (time subject to change without notice) and are now permanent residents on the Las Vegas Strip. The Dolphin Habitat Surrounded by palm trees, lush foliage and 2.1 million gallons of water, the Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage is truly an oasis on the Las Vegas Strip. Whether the bottlenose dolphins who call the habitat home are swimming, “tail walking” across water, catching fish or bonding with each other, you’ll get an up-close and personal look at their fun, intriguing lifestyle. While many people think of Sea World when they think of dolphins, many don’t realize that they can see the creatures right in the midst of the Las Vegas desert. The Dolphin Habitat is a research facility and is also designed to educate people about these amazing animals. And while the dolphins don’t perform on a regular schedule, visitors can still be surprised by their natural playfulness. Exercising is also very vital to the dolphins’ health. When the trainers aren’t exercising or having fun with the dolphins, they conduct regular check-ups to ensure that they’re healthy. The Dolphin Habitat offers an underwater viewing area. But if you’re trying to take a picture of the dolphins, it can get a little tricky. Since these dolphins are so swift and playful, you may find yourself running back and forth to capture the perfect photo. The habitat also features shaded seating, a café and a gift shop filled with memorabilia including plush dolphin toys and even dolphin-shaped water guns. Dolphin Habitat visitors who wish to get a little more involved with the animals can choose from a couple different programs. Painting With the Dolphins allows you to create a mammal masterpiece. Available from noon to 3:30 p.m. daily, you will get up close and personal with a dolphin as you collaborate on creating an original piece of art. Cost of $199 includes price of admission, your unique masterpiece, a certificate and a photograph of the experience. The Trainer for a Day program, meanwhile, is an all-day activity allowing guests slip into a wetsuit and get up close to the dolphins. From 9:45 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. you will interact with and feed the dolphins while accompanied by habitat staff. A staff member will snap photos of your experience throughout this this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. At the end of the day, your photos will be put on a CD for you to take home as a one-of-a-kind souvenir. Price varies between $495 and $595 depending on the season, with a four person maximum. Call (702) 792-7889 for more information or to make reservations. Whether you come to see the dolphins or some of the rarest white tigers and lions in the world, The Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat may prove to be the wildest moment on your Vegas trip.
If you loved the 1997 movie “Titanic,” then the Titanic exhibit at the Luxor will blow you away. Featuring more than 250 authentic artifacts, as well as breathtaking replicas from the famous ship, the Titanic exhibit truly brings history to life. One of the most heartfelt elements of the exhibit is the personal stories of the passengers. During the tour, the exhibit’s staff shares personal tales from the passengers. Some stories have a tragic, yet romantic ending. For instance, some wives chose to stay behind with their husbands instead of climbing onto the lifeboats. At the beginning of the exhibit, patrons receive a boarding pass of an actual passenger on Titanic. On the back of each boarding pass is the age and the itinerary of that person. At the end of the tour, patrons find out if he or she survived the Titanic by finding the name on the wall memorial. Amazing artifacts Titanic Fast Facts 706 passengers survived, but 1,517 were lost. Even if all 20 lifeboats had been filled to capacity, there was only room in them for 1,178 people. The Titanic was the largest moving object of its time. It cost $7.5 million to build Titanic and carried a $5 million insurance policy. It would have cost about $400 million to build the ship today. More than 15,000 men worked on the Titanic for nearly three years to construct the hull and internal structure. More than 100,000 people gathered to watch the Titanic sail off to New York. For a third-class passenger, a ticket was $40 ($900 today). For a first-class passenger, tickets were $4,350 a piece ($50,000 today). It took about 60 pounds of coal for the ship to move 60 feet. In addition to the passengers’ stories, other fascinating details include their belongings. You’ll discover the Titanic passengers brought their own china and silverware. Each cup, plate, pitcher and bowl has its own interesting, distinct look. One of the exhibit’s unique pieces discovered is the au gratin plates set, stacked neatly in rows. The au gratin dishes were found lined up inside of a wooden crate that had deteriorated over time — an image that is recreated in the exhibition. Other artifacts include ship tools, postcards, currency, a pipe, a spittoon and playing cards. The Big Piece While the tiny pieces leave behind a lasting impression, The Big Piece — a huge piece of the ship’s hull — definitely stands out. This piece is currently the largest Titanic artifact ever retrieved. The Big Piece weighs an astounding 15 tons and measures more than 26 feet long. Riveting replicas In addition to the artifacts, the exhibit also features amazing replicas from the Titanic. One of these includes the staircase replica. Most remember the staircase scene in “Titanic” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Seeing the staircase in person brings the Titanic to life. The staircase is where first-class passengers met, mingled and admired each other’s outfits. The intricately-detailed staircase replica includes iron, bronze and even the stained glass dome. Visitors have the option of having their picture taken and purchasing it at the end of the tour. Other noteworthy replicas include the promenade deck (which features the sounds of waves crashing and a starry sky) as well as an iceberg, which guests are more than welcome to touch. Since the iceberg was specifically created for the exhibit, it contains its own cooling system to prevent it from melting. Make sure to stop and take a look at the third-class and the finely decorated first-class sleeping quarters. Adorned with burgundy colors, elegant décor and mahogany accents, the first-class suite was considered more luxurious than any hotel room on land in its time. Great for the entire family From young to old, visitors of all ages will enjoy this exhibit. There is also gift shop for those who want to take a piece of Titanic home with them. Visitors can purchase everything from T-shirts, stuffed animals, captain hats for kids, cups, key chains and much more. Titanic’s overall experience gives guests a better perspective and appreciation of what happened on that fateful night. It allows visitors to remember the story of Titanic, especially the heroism of the crew and the passengers that were lost that night.
Preserving the bodies To keep the specimens in top condition without decaying, they go through a method known as polymer preservation, in which all of the tissue and water is replaced with silicone rubber. First, each specimen must be preserved to stop decay. Next, it’s dissected to feature specific parts of the body. Once dissected, the specimen is immersed in acetone. This process removes all body water. After the acetone process, the specimen is placed in a silicone polymer bath and sealed in a vacuum chamber. During this stage, the acetone leaves the body in the form of gas and the silicone polymer replaces it, entering each cell and body tissue. A catalyst is then applied to the specimen, which hardens it and completes the process. Experts are available at the exhibit for guests who have further questions. With a name like Bodies in Las Vegas, it’s easy to assume you’re going to a topless show. But Bodies…The Exhibition at the Luxor is even more revealing. Bodies will easily trump any science lab dissection you’ve done in school. With an intricate, 3-D vision of the human form, visitors get the chance to see real bodies, preserved along with their inner organs. The exhibit showcases 13 whole-body specimens from China and more than 260 organs and partial body specimens. There are multiple rooms dedicated to different parts of the body, including the muscular, skeletal, circulatory and respiratory systems. There is also a more sensitive section of the exhibition showing fetal development. Guests can see different stages of a baby’s development, from eight weeks old to eight months, as well as fetuses with various birth defects, such as conjoined twins. This exhibit is located in its own private area, so those who feel uncomfortable viewing it can skip to the next section. It is both startling and informative to see so many body parts and inner organs out in the open when they are usually tucked safely away under your skin. One wouldn’t expect such an intricate part of the nervous system, like the spinal cord, to resemble a clump of seaweed. The tongue, meanwhile, looks a bit like a small, thick cut of steak (Would you like that medium-rare or well-done?). One of the more startling sights in the exhibit is the display of a smoker’s lung in the respiratory section. Visitors can see and compare a healthy lung to a blackened smoker’s lung. There is also a brain on display here from a person who suffered a stroke — ironically it looks a bit like the inside of an ashtray. After reading some scary, mind-opening facts (like a single pack of cigarettes takes four hours and 40 minutes off your life), you may think twice about puffing. For the guests’ convenience, there is a cigarette disposal bin nearby. Bodies also offers enrichment that helps visitors improve their quality of life and prevent diseases. Reading the quick facts on the wall is almost as interesting as checking out the specimens. For instance, did you know eating breakfast really does help improve your memory? There are plenty of benches scattered throughout the facility for guests who want to sit down and take a break. For those who want an in-depth description about particular displays, audio wands are available for $5. Expert docents can also answer questions. Visitors are encouraged to write their impressions of Bodies in one of several guest books at the end of the exhibition. As for those who want to take a little piece of Bodies home with them, the gift shop features some a collection of books, incense holders, models, key chains, souvenirs and educational doodads for kids.

The High Roller in Las Vegas isn’t your average Ferris wheel. And it’s not really a Ferris wheel; it’s an observation wheel — the biggest in the world at a staggering 550-feet-tall. Yes, you read that right: 550 feet. That’s nine feet taller than the Singapore Flyer and 107 feet taller than the London Eye. It currently holds the Guinness World Record for largest observation wheel. Located at the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, the High Roller is the focal point of the $550 million open-air shopping, dining and entertainment district, The LINQ Promenade. It’s a sight that can’t be missed. Literally, you can’t miss it. The High Roller is comprised of enclosed and air-conditioned transparent pods holding around 40 passengers each. The pods are roomy with a couple benches and the ride is smooth, not typically bothering those with a minor fear of heights. From boarding to exit, the entire experience is about 30 minutes long (be sure to hit the bathroom before you board). Along the way, you enjoy in-cabin video and music shows while witnessing a truly unparalleled 360-degree view of Las Vegas both day and night. With panoramic views of the Strip, the valley and the mountains, there’s something to see from every angle. But the southwest corner (your immediate right when you enter the pod) offers the best Strip views at the highest point. If you happen to nab this sweet spot, be courteous to other riders. There may be up to 39 other people riding with you in your pod. They want photos too. The High Roller is accessible from The LINQ via multiple entrances, including a back porte cochère off of LINQ Lane. The Las Vegas Monorail, meanwhile, cruises right in front of the High Roller with convenient stops at both the Flamingo and The LINQ. To board the High Roller, guests pass through a building, which includes interactive elements, bathrooms and a bar and lounge. The building also has a hospitality area with outdoor patios, which can be reserved for catered private parties of up to 500 people. Just as the High Roller has transformed the Las Vegas skyline, a ride inside it may transform you. After a spin on this wheel, your view of Vegas will likely never be the same.

Pieces by the likes of Warhol, Picasso, and Lichtenstein have all been featured within their walls, and the gallery is often changed to showcase new art and art styles to highlight multiple cultures within their gallery space. Inspired by the idea of Asé, the West African concept relating to our power to produce change, Asé: Afro Frequencies celebrates the historical, social, and cultural aspects of the Black experience. Afro-surrealist artist Vince Frasier created this unique exhibit filled with reimagined realities that allow us to see the world through his unique cultural lens, accompanied by the poetic spoken words of Ursula Rucker. The multi-sensory art exhibition merges Fraser’s distinct style and ARTECHOUSE’s technological capabilities to reenvision historical imagery and familiar scenes where the real and digital come together, offering a 21st-century perspective. Housing more than 2,000 animals including sharks, exotic fresh and saltwater fish, massive sea turtles and much more. Shark Reef offers the aquatic experience of a lifetime. The ocean is probably the last thing people think of when they visit the dry desert of Las Vegas, but the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay changes that. Shark Reef is reminiscent of an ancient temple slowly sinking into the ocean. The tunnel, which houses five species of sharks and the aquarium’s largest animals, is designed to look like a sunken shipwreck. Here, visitors can witness a scuba diver’s view of these mesmerizing creatures, including nurse sharks and Sandtiger sharks measuring up to nine feet long, and sandbar sharks that measure more than six feet in length. In addition to the shark tunnel, guests can experience exhibits featuring crocodiles, freshwater fish, piranhas and much more. Since many of us aren’t planning to pet a piranha anytime soon, visitors can enjoy getting a “hands-on” experience with various stingrays, sharks and horseshoe crabs at the touch pool. (currently only available for viewing) Also at the Shark Reef is an eight-foot-long Komodo dragon, the largest species in the lizard family. This particular Komodo lives within an environment similar to its habitat, complete with sand, heat regulating boulders and a pool. Shark Reef’s naturalists are available to answer any questions visitors may have. Located at the end of the exhibit, Shark Reef’s gift shop features an assortment of figurines, picture frames, trinkets and souvenir photos for those who took one right before the tour. Sharks: Blacktip reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, bonnethead sharks, nurse sharks, sand tiger sharks, sandbar sharks, zebra sharks, coral cat sharks, and Galapagos shark. Tropical and Fresh Water Fish: Several species of angelfish, puffer fish and tang fish, and venomous tropical fish including lionfish and foxface. Reptiles: Golden crocodiles, green sea turtles and Komodo dragon. Marine Invertebrates, Rays: California round, blue spotted masked stingrays, bowmouth guitarfish, green sawfish and Pacific sea nettle jellies.
Grey’s Anatomy freaks – we mean fans – scrub in because we’re going deep under the skin to study all the parts of the body. Every piece of the body is revealed going through the exhibit, and when we say everything, we mean everything (use your imagination). We’ve learned that heart surgeons are basically bomb technicians. The inner workings of the heart reminded us of explosive wires, blue, yellow and red. We decided against touching anything, so neither should you. The attraction is filled with some fun facts and we’re going to tell you our favorites. Did you know a human bite force is 200 pounds per square inch or that babies are born with 300 bones but adults have 206? Well neither did we, pretty awesome if you ask us. And if by the end of it you become attached to the attraction, you can donate your body to the exhibit upon your death. We decided to go ahead and sign up a couple of our friends, we’re sure they will love that email.
